This week's Pepsi Murray State Athlete of the Week award goes to baseball's Kyle Tiernan, who capped off a comeback win for the 'Breds by driving in the game-winning run in a 9-8 victory over Bradley University on Sunday.
Tiernan, a sophomore shortstop from St. Louis, Mo., had two hits - both doubles - and three runs batted in during Sunday's game, which saw the resilient 'Breds make two comebacks to win the game.
Heading into the seventh inning, the 'Breds trailed 7-4, but Murray State mounted a rally. Tiernan capped off a four-run inning when he stepped to the plate with two outs and doubled in catcher Wes Cunningham and second baseman Cory Hodskins, putting the 'Breds ahead 8-7.
Bradley was able to tie the game in the top of the ninth, setting the stage for the 'Breds' second comeback of the game. After Hodskins led off with a single, Cunningham singled him to second. Tiernan stepped in and laced a clutch double down the left-field line, driving in Hodskins for the winning run, and giving Murray State their first victory of the 2008 season.
The 'Breds (1-2) resume action on Wednesday, Feb. 27, when they travel to Memphis, Tenn., to face the Memphis Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
