The Murray State men's and women's cross country teams kicked off the 2010 schedule Friday afternoon at the SIU Early Bird in Carbondale, Ill.
The Racers competed against Missouri, Rend Lake College, and host Southern Illinois.
Senior Katelyn Jones finished the 4K course in 15:09.6 to place second, eight seconds behind race winner Eden Slater of Missouri. The Tigers placed five runners in the top six.
Asenath NaAman led a pack of three MSU racers placing inside the top ten with a time of 15:41.7. Karissa Magnuson and Kayla Crusham each finished within six seconds of NaAman.
Freshman Bernadette Catron placed 13th for the Racers in her first collegiate race, and Jami Kloenne and Courtney Kovatch rounded out the MSU entries in 18th and 19th.
Derek Perry was the high finisher for the men's squad, completing the 6K course in 21:04.6 to finish 13th. Ryan Johnson finished under a minute behind Perry to come in 16th.
The Racers will next compete in the Commodore Classic, held on Sept. 18 in Nashville, Tenn., and hosted by Vanderbilt University.
