The Murray State Racers begin their quest for a third straight Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship when they host the UT Martin Skyhawks at the CFSB Center in a 7 p.m. tip Wednesday.
The Racers (12-0) kept their perfect start to the season going Saturday with 66-53 win over visiting Arkansas State. MSU moved up to no. 22 in the associated press poll this week after debuting at no. 24 a week ago. The Racers broke into the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll this week at no. 22. Additionaly, MSU is ranked no. 2 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25.
The Racers are meeting the Skyhawks for the 42nd time in their series that started in 1979. MSU holds a 21-0 mark at home against UTM.
The Racers are playing their third game as a ranked team this season and their 17th all-time (MSU is 8-8 as a ranked team). MSU's 12-0 start is tied with the 1936-37 & 1950-51 teams for second-best start all-time and behind the 1935-36 start of 16-0. The all-time win streak is 17 set by the 31-5 team from 2009-10.
Junior Isaiah Canaan is set to become the 38th member of the MSU 1000-Point Club as he begins the UTM game with 980 career points. Canaan's current 19.3 scoring average is second in the OVC and 29th in the nation. Teammate Ivan Aska already joined the club this season marking the fourth straight season that a Racer has made the coveted 1,000-point mark. The streak started with Tyler Holloway (2009) and continued with Danero Thomas (2010) and Isacc Miles last season.
The Racers have an 12-game home winning streak since their last loss to Eastern Illinois (Jan. 20). The Racers have posted 164 wins and a winning percentage of 85 percent in their 14th season in the building and have never lost three in a row at home during that time. The Racers are 33-2 at home in the last three seasons.
New MSU head coach Steve Prohm is part of 52 first-year head coaches in NCAA D-I. His 12-0 mark is the best among the 24 first-time head coaches. Prohm was named coach (May 23) after Billy Kennedy took the head coaching job at Texas A&M.
Prohm's 12-0 start is the best for a rookie head coach in Racer history ahead of the 9-0 that Tevester Anderson (now at Jackson State) had in 1998.
