The Murray State Racers return home to the CFSB Center Wednesday for their 153rd meeting with the Eastern Kentucky Colonels in Murray, Ky. Tip time at the CFSB Center, where the Racers have won their last 13, is 7 p.m. The series with EKU began in 1930 and these two original founding members of the Ohio Valley Conference have played every season since 1945. The Racers have won the last six against the Colonels including the last three played at home.
MSU is one of the remaining four unbeaten teams this season in NCAA D-I with a 14-0 mark. MSU joins Syracuse (Big East), Missouri and Baylor (Each Big-12) as teams who haven't lost a game yet. The Racers are into their fourth consecutive week of being ranked in the Associated Press Poll. MSU is up to no. 19 after debuting at no. 24 on Dec. 12. MSU broke into the ESPN/USA Today Poll on Dec. 19 and is higher in this poll this week at no. 18. MSU jumped to no. 1 team in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll for the first in program history. The Racers' 14-0 start trails only the 16-0 start by the 1935-36 MSU team. The all-time win streak at MSU is 17 set by the 31-5 team from 2009-10.
Junior Isaiah Canaan begins the EKU game four points from becoming the 38th member of the MSU 1000-Point Club. Canaan starts the night with 996 career points. His current 17.7 scoring average is third in the OVC and 66th in the nation. Teammate Ivan Aska already joined the club this season marking the fourth straight season that a Racer has made the coveted 1,000-point mark. The streak started with Tyler Holloway (2009) and continued with Danero Thomas (2010) and Isacc Miles last season.
New MSU head coach Steve Prohm is part of 52 first-year head coaches in NCAA D-I. His 14-0 mark is the best among the 24 first-time head coaches. Prohm was named coach (May 23) after Billy Kennedy took the head coaching job at Texas A&M.
Prohm's 14-0 start is the best for a rookie head coach in Racer history ahead of the 9-0 that Tevester Anderson (now at Jackson State) had in 1998.
