Murray State men's golfer Patrick Newcomb was named the Murray State Pepsi Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.

Newcomb, a senior from Benton, Ky., placed fourth in a field of 70 players at the ASU Fall Beach Classic at Peninsula Golf and Racket Club in Gulf Shores, Ala., a week ago. Newcomb started the with a pair of 1-under-par 71's and finished with a 4-over 76 in the final round last Tuesday for a 218 total.

The Racers finished second at the tournament hosted by Arkansas State, marking their fifth-straight event this fall with a top-four finish or better. Included in the fall run for MSU are two wins. Newcomb was also named the Ohio Valley Conference Golfer of the Week for his performance.

Newcomb, who was named the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year last April, had a great fall season for the Racers. He won the Wasioto Winds Kickoff (Sep. 11) and was a runner-up at the Skyhawk Classic (Oct. 9).
