Murray State Basketball seniors Ivan Aska, Jewuan Long and Donte Poole were recognized this week for an amazing achievement that places them at the top of the Racers' program in career wins for one class.
With Murray State's 80-62 win Thursday at Tennessee State, this trio has been involved in 100 wins during their four seasons at MSU.
“I am extremely happy for these three seniors,” MSU Head Coach Steve Prohm said. “Ivan, Jewuan and Donte have represented this program with great character and provided tremendous leadership during their time here. These three seniors truly embody what this program represents on and off the floor.”
What the current MSU senior class has accomplished is impressive. They've posted a 100-27 (.787) overall record and 58-11 (.840) record in the Ohio Valley Conference.
The previous record of 99 wins was accomplished from 1996-2000 and included four-year players Mike Turner and Aaron Page. Other outstanding Racers during this time included: Isaac Spencer, Aubrey Reese, Rod Murray, Vincent Rainey, De'Teri Mayes and Chad Townsend.
In 2008-09, Aska, Long and Poole helped the Racers to a 19-12 mark and they took second in the OVC with a 13-5 record. They were part of the 31-5 season in 2009-10 that included an OVC regular season and tournament title and MSU's first win in the NCAA Tournament since 1988 when the Racers knocked off Vanderbilt in the first round in San Jose, Calif. Their winning continued in 2010-11 when MSU won another OVC title and went 23-9 and played in the National Invitation Tournament.
This season, Aska (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), Long (Jackson, Tenn.) and Poole (Las Vegas, Nev.) have led the Racers to a third straight outright OVC regular season title and their highest national rankings in the 87 years of MSU basketball. The Racers rose as high as 7th in the ESPN/USA Today Poll and 9th in the Associated Press Poll. MSU had a record 23-0 winning streak to start the season, which was an OVC and school record. The Racers were the last team in NCAA D-I basketball to lose a game this season.
“When records are broken, there are many people to thank and to attribute the success,” Prohm added. “On behalf of Ivan, Jewuan and Donte, I want to thank all of their former teammates and coaches that have played an invaluable role in helping them achieve this milestone.
