The Murray State Racers enjoyed a big NCAA Selection Sunday at their former arena, but then the announcement was made shortly after 5 p.m. central time and the Racers were, well, off to the races in preparing for their first opponent.
MSU (30-1) was named the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament west region and will play No. 11 seed Colorado State (20-11) Thursday at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
“My first thought was I'm just glad the waiting is over,” MSU Head Coach Steve Prohm said, whose team won the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship about a week ago. “I'm glad the wait is behind us and we can concentrate on our opponent now. It's time to play and we'll spend the next three days preparing to play Colorado State.”
Game time for the Racers and Rams is set for Noon ET on CBS.
The winner of the MSU-CSU game will meet Saturday against the winner of No. 3 Marquette and the winner of a first round game between BYU and Iona. The winner of the match-ups in Louisville will advance to the west regional semifinals in Phoenix, Ariz. The upper part of the west bracket features: No. 1 Michigan State vs No. 16 LIU Brooklyn, No. 8 Memphis vs No. 9 Saint Louis who will play in Columbus, Ohio. No. 5 New Mexico faces No. 12 Long Beach State in Portland, Ore., as well as No. 4 Louisville against No. 13 Davidson.
Today's Racer Dance Party was held at old Racer Arena which was the home to MSU Basketball from the early 1950's to 1998. The afternoon was filled with fan interaction with the MSU team and the day was made better by the MSU Band, Racer Girls and cheerleaders. The event was covered with a live radio broadcast from Froggy 103.7 FM and the day was a good time to celebrate the Racers' tremendous 2011-12 season. MSU's 30-1 run featured their 23rd OVC regular season title, and 15th OVC Tournament title and 15th trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Local CBS affiliate KFVS TV supplied a live shot of the excitement from Murray back to the CBS Sports studios in New York.
