Very windy conditions wreaked havoc Friday afternoon, but when the dust settled, it was #29 Purdue that prevailed with a 5-2 victory over Murray State in the opener of a three-game series at Reagan Field.
The Breds (8-6) got on the board in the first inning with the help of the bright, sunny skies. Ty Stetson started the inning with a double to left field. After the next two guys were retired, Mike Kozlowski hit a high chopper to the left side of the mound that the pitcher lost in the sun and was not able to field. Jacob Rhodes used the sun to its advantage as he followed with an RBI single to center field.
The Boilermakers (9-1) got their offense going in the third as Stephen Talbot's line drive to center field got up in the wind and went over the head of the center fielder for a leadoff triple. Tyler Spillner followed with an RBI double to left field. Cameron Perkins delivered an RBI single through the left side ahead of Kevin Plawecki's double just inside the right-field line.
PUR added a run in the fourth as a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases with two outs before Eric Charles drew the third walk of the inning to drive in a run.
MSU got one run back in the fifth as Travis Isaak doubled to right field. After a Rhodes single and a Cody Larson walk, Luke Daugherty drove in Isaak with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Boilers pushed the lead back to three runs in the sixth as Stephen Talbott beat out an infield single and came around to score on Eric Charles' single to right field.
Tyler Beers (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits and four strikeouts over four innings. Luke Shuemaker continued his strong season as he allowed just one run on six hits and two strikeouts over five innings.
Blake Mascarello (3-0) earned the win in relief after allowing just one hit and striking out four over the final 4.1 innings.
Rhodes led the offense by going 3-for-4, Kozlowski and Paul Ritzheimer added to hits each.
The two teams play the middle game of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
