Murray State junior outfielder Derek Yoder delivered a two-out walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Breds a 4-3 victory over Kentucky Tuesday evening at Brooks Stadium. The victory marked the second-straight time the Breds have defeated the Wildcats at Brooks Stadium.
Anthony Bayus got the rally started by getting a base hit through the left side. After a flyout and a groundout, Bayus was standing on second base. The Wildcats chose to walk intentionally Michael Hargrove to get to Yoder. In only his 27th collegiate at-bat, Yoder ripped the first pitch he saw into right center to score the game-winning run.
MSU was in the position to win the game late after getting a strong start from Andrew Bramley. The sophomore kept the Wildcats off balance through six innings. He ran into some trouble in the seventh, before exiting with two on and one out. He finished the day allowing two runs on three hits over 6.1 innings.
The Breds (21-28) jumped out to the lead in fourth as a pair of Wildcat throwing errors helped to push across three runs. Yoder started the frame with a double to right center and went to third on Luke Daugherty's single to center. That is when it got interesting, as Matt McGowan put down a bunt base hit to score Yoder from third. The throw to first went into right field, moving Daugherty to third. The throw down to second to get McGowan was also errant, allowing Daugherty to slide home safely.
UK (30-21) finally got on the board in the seventh inning against Bramley. With two on and two outs, Max Kuhn touched up the Breds reliever for a three-run home run to left field.
Tyler Saltsman continued his strong senior campaign by allowing no hits over three scoreless innings. BT Wichman tossed two-third of an inning, before John Lollar (2-0) needed only one pitch to record the final out and pick up the victory.
Ty Stetson, Bayus and Yoder each collected two hits as the Breds outhit the Wildcats 10-5.
The Breds return to action Thursday afternoon as they open a crucial three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at Eastern Kentucky. The series is set to get underway at 5 p.m.
