Coming off their first win in the NIT since 1980, The Murray State Racers (28-5) hit the road for a second round game Monday against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. The 8 p.m. tip an been seen on ESPN with Roxy Bernstein and Miles Simon calling the action from the Reynolds Center in Tulsa, Okla. All Murray State games are heard over free radio on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Neal Bradley is in his 24th season as the Voice of the Racers. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides analysis.Â
The Racers are a No. 3 seed and Tulsa is a No. 2 seed. The winner this game gets the winner of No. 4 Illinois State (21-12) at No. 1 Old Dominion (25-7) in the quarterfinals. If ODU wins, they will host in Norfolk, Va. If they lose, the winner of the Racers and Tulsa (23-10) will host on Wednesday, March 25.
Murray State started their eighth NIT appearance Tuesday with an 81-66 home win over UTEP on the strength of several great performances. Jarvis Williams notched his 12th double-double of the season with 25 points and 14 rebounds, while Cameron Payne had his second double-double this season with 14 points and 10 assists. Payne was only three rebounds shy of a triple-double. Jonathan Fairell had 10 rebounds for his 11th double-digit game this season. The win for MSU was their first at home and their first win since Coach Ron Green led MSU to a road win at Alabama in 1980.
The Racers have effectively refocused their efforts on the NIT after they saw the nation's second-longest winning streak end (March 7) in the OVC Tournament championship. MSU's 25-game run included an undefeated in December, January and February as MSU went 16-0 in league play. MSU made a sure case for being included in the NCAA Tournament, but gladly accepted a spot in the NIT as regular season champions of the OVC.
MSU has won 11 straight road games since a loss (Nov. 24) at Xavier. MSU set the school record of 16 in a row that spanned the entire 2011-12 season and some of 2012-13.
Murray and Tulsa both played the Houston Cougars this season. The Racers faced UH in their home and season opener (Nov. 14) and lost 77-74. Tulsa played UH three times as fellow members of the American Athletic Conference. Tulsa won all three meetings: Home 72-54 (Jan. 4), Away 57-44 (Feb. 5) and in the AAC Tournament in Hartford, Conn., 59-51 (March 13).
The 2015 NIT will use two experimental rules. Instead of the usual 35-second shot clock, they'll trim it to 30-seconds. Â The NIT will enlarge the restricted area under the basket from three feet to four feet.
