Mains Takes Place In KY Pro Football HOF

Murray State football alumnus Gil Mains took his rightful place in Kentucky football history Saturday night at the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Brown Theatre in Louisville. the organization announced Thursday. Others that were inducted on Friday include Doug Buffone (Louisville '65), Aaron Jones (Eastern Ky. '88) and Jacob Tamme (Kentucky '08), while Alabama head coach Nick Saban was also honored with the NFLPA, Kentucky Chapter Blanton Collier Award.
Mains also made history on Friday, as he became the first Racer to be inducted int to the Kentucky Pro Football hall of Fame. His son, Gil Mains, Jr., accepted the award on behalf of his late father, who passed away in 2009.
The Mt. Carmel, Illinois native played tackle for the Racers from 1948-1951, winning three OVC championships and earning All-OVC honors in 1950 and 1951. Following military service, Mains was selected in the 20th round of the 1952 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. Mains played for the Lions from 1953 to 1961, where he won two NFL championship in 1953 and 1957. He was inducted into the Murray State Hall of Fame in 1969.
Proceeds from the 2015 Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction ceremony and golf outing went to Kosair Children's Hospital through the Children's Hospital Foundation. Specifically funds raised went towards pediatric heart care and Brave Hearts, which is a support group of local families united by their children's fight for life after being born with complex congenital heart defects requiring heart surgery.
