The Murray State Racers used one of their best defensive performances of the season Thursday in a 68-58 victory over Eastern Illinois. They held Panthers to 32 percent from the field on 17-of-54 shots.
Racer senior Wayne Langston poured in a career-high 24 points on 10-of-14 shots to go with seven rebounds and a pair of assists. His 24 points was the season-high for the Racers. Jeffery Moss and Gee McGhee added 10 points each to help the Racers attack to a 45 percent night on 25-of-55 shots. MSU was 6-of-15 from the 3-point line, with McGhee hitting three. The Racers got solid performances off the bench from A.J. Patty, Justin Seymour and Charles Brown.
The Cougars come to Murray after losing at Austin Peay 90-86 in overtime. Burak Elsik, this week's OVC Player of the Week scored 22 points, while  Jake Newton was 7-of-10 from the 3-point line for 22 points.
The Racers and SIUE have two common non-conference opponents. Â SIUE defeated Southern Illinois on the road (Dec. 9), before the Salukis came to MSU and won 88-73 (Dec. 18). The Racers defeated Milwaukee 66-63 (Nov. 23) at the Gulf Coast Showcase, before SIUE lost on the road at Milwaukee (Dec. 3) 64-51.
The halftime score this season has been a decent predictor on the way the final will go for the Racers. through 19 games, the Racers are 7-2 when they lead at half and 2-8 when they trail.
The Racers and Cougars are meeting for the 17th time overall and this is the 11th meeting in Murray where MSU holds a 9-1 advantage. The Racers lead the all-time series 13-3.
After the SIUE game, the Racers take to the road next week with games at Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday and at UT Martin on Saturday (Jan. 30).
