8/4/2017 11:46:00 PM | Men's Basketball
2017 Racer Hoopalooza got going Friday night at the CFSB Center as one of the greatest traditions in all of college basketball was celebrated once again.
Â
MSU's all-time leading rebounder, Popeye Jones, was the guest of honor for his amazing career with the Racers that ended with four Ohio Valley Conference titles and three appearances in the NCAAs in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Ending his career in 1992, Jones was a two-time OVC Player of the Year.
Â
Players spanning 68 years of Murray State Basketball were in attendance and for the first time, the current MSU roster attended. The oldest players that made it to Hoopalooza included Karl Husung who was a freshman in 1949 for Coach Harlan Hodges. Dean Akridge was a freshman in the 1951-52 season and a teammate with Husung when he was a junior. Barney Thweat was a freshman with the Racers in the 1952-53 season. The trio represented the oldest Racers at the event.
Â
Some of MSU's greatest MSU coaches were also here including Cal Luther, Scott Edgar and Steve Newton. Current Racer coach Matt McMahon was also on hand and introduced his team and staff.
Â
The 2017 edition of Hoopalooza was the fourth after the event was held in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Â
With the weekend just getting started, Hoopalooza moves to Miller Memorial Golf Course Saturday morning for a golf scramble. Many of the former Racer players are getting together at 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon to play some pick-up games at the Ray Center which is adjacent to the CFSB Center. Fans are invited to come out and watch.
