Racers Claim 11th OVC Championship & Fourth Back-to-Back

The Murray State women's golf team won their 11th Ohio Valley Conference Golf Championship in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The Racers are back-to-back champs for the fourth time in program history. They successfully defended their 2017 title with a gutsy finish in windy conditions at the Schoolmaster Course in which the Racers posted a final round 303 to edge Jacksonville State (299) by four shots 898-902.
The Racers posted scores of 307-288-303=898, while JSU had rounds of 308-295-299=902. Eastern Kentucky finished third on scores of 312-299-299=910.
The Racers placed three of their starting five in the top-5 and they all earned OVC All-Tournament honors. Moa Folke and Lucila Puente Rodriguez de Austria shared second place. Folke, who was trying for a third-straight individual title fell four shots short of Jacksonville State's Valentina Giraldo. The senior Folke, had rounds of 73-69-79=221. Only a sophomore, Puente Rodriguez has a bright future after briefly taking the lead on the back nine and finishing with rounds of 73-76-73=221. Sophomore Raeshay Surendran made a splash from the fifth spot in the MSU lineup earning All-Tournament honors with a fifth-place finish on scores of 77-72-73=222. Anna Moore placed 24th on scores of 88-74-78=240 and Linette Holmsykke was 29th after rounds of 85-73-83=241. They both had a hand in MSU's team win as Moore's second round 74 counted as did Holmslykke's second round 73.
OVC Tournament Notes
The Racers win their 11th Ohio Valley Conference title in the 25 years the event has been staged. This also marked the fourth time the Racers have won back-to-back championships after they won it last year in 2017.
The Murray State women's golf program has an outstanding tradition that began when Head Coach Velvet Milkman was hired to start the program in 1993. MSU has titles in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2017 and 2018.
The Racers will learn of their NCAA assignment on Wednesday (April 25) at 4:30 p.m. when the field of 74 teams will be announced on the Golf Channel.
The Racers will make their fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The others have come in 2009, 2010, 2014 and 2017.
There are four sites that will host NCAA Tournament regionals and the Racers will be sent to one of them. Those sites are: Austin, Texas (University of Texas GC), Madison, Wisconsin (University Ridge Golf Course), Stanford, California (TPC Harding Park) and Tallahassee, Florida (Don Veller Seminole GC).
Moa Folke's bid to be the first Racer to win three OVC medalist titles fell short, but she is one of two Racers that have won twice, as she joins Jenny Daag (1998 & 1999).
Sophomore Raeysha Surendran had an outstanding event and earned a spot on the OVC All-Tournament Team with a fourth-place finish. Her score of 222 tied her career-best from last September at the Payne Stewart Memorial in Springfield, Missouri.
In 25 OVC Championships, the Racers keep their streak alive of having at least one individual finish in fifth place every time. Today they had three players in the top-5. With Lucila Puente Rodriguez de Austria and Moa Folke sharing second place, MSU has 20 individual to finish of third place or better.
JSU's Valentina Giraldo was the 2018 medalist on scores of 76-68-74=218.
The Schoolmaster course at The Shoals played to a par of 72 and a length of 6,043 yards. This marked the first time the OVC had played its championship on the Schoolmaster course. The 2019 event will also be played at The Shoals on the same course.
The OVC Men's Golf Championship starts Monday at The Shoals as the field will be taking on the Fighting Joe Course (April 23-25).
