Tanner led the nation in receiving in ’67, catching an OVC-record 88 passes for 1,019 yards, also a league record. He scored three TDs. His 16 receptions against Austin Peay is an all-time best in the OVC, along with his 255 receiving yards against Middle Tennessee State.
The year before, Tanner started at defensive halfback and led Murray State in interceptions with three. He had another year of eligibility remaining after the ’67 season but elected to complete his graduation requirements. (The Murray Ledger & Times, September 24, 1992, Homecoming 1992)
