Wurth, from Paducah, was a three-year starting shortstop for Murray State and an all-OVC pick in 1974 and ’75. He set school records for most hits in a season (51) and most runs batted in (45) as a junior in ’74 while batting .327. He batted .404 the next year, with 67 hits and 52 RBIs. His .348 career batting average ranks among MSU’s Top 10 of all-time.
Wurth was co-captain of the ’75 Thoroughbreds when they posted a 40-9 record, won the OVC championship, participated in the NCAA Tournament and led the nation in batting. Following a one-year stint in professional baseball, he returned to Murray State as an assistant coach for 11 years. (The Murray Ledger & Times, September 24, 1992, Homecoming 1992)
