The Skyhawks opened up with goals in the 21st minute (Annie Cook) and the 31st minute (Katie Jackson) to take a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Racers (3-8-3, 0-3-0 OVC) pulled to within 2-1 in the 56th minute as senior midfielder Lindsey Gustafson scored her first goal of the season and the 12th of her career on an assist from junior forward Kristin Roberston.
After UTM (6-4-2, 1-1-1 OVC) pushed the lead back out to 3-1 in the 75th minute on a Dani Myrick goal, MSU was able to pull back to within a goal just moments later. In the 81st minute of action, Junior forward Theresa Reedy knocked home her fourth goal of the season, the 17th of her career, on an assist from senior forward Emily Schaller to give the Racers a chance down the stretch.
The Skyhawks answered the challenge by putting the game out of reach in the 86th minute on Myrick's second goal of the day.
MSU out-shot UTM 21-17, but the Skyhawks took advantage of a 14-10 advantage in shots-on-goal. Freshman goalkeeper Annie Fortier did turn away nine UTM shots, while Skyhawk goalkeeper Megan Dempsey finished with eight saves on the day.
The win was the Skyhawks first-ever over MSU after the Racers' had won three of the four previous meetings, while last year's matchup ended in a 1-1 tie in Murray.
Up next, the Racers return home to host OVC rival Eastern Illinois on Friday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. at Cutchin Field.
