Sara Geiger scored in the 103rd minute as Samford battled back from a three-goal deficit to defeat Murray State (3-5-3, 0-1-0 OVC) despite Schaller's big night.
Samford (5-2-3, 1-0-0 OVC) trailed 3-0 when Sharon Young finally put the Bulldogs on the board in the 72nd minute on an assist from Marian Wagner. The goal didn't seem like much at the time but Lindsay Shanks hit the post with a shot in the 85th minute that Wagner followed and made the score 3-2 with five minute left to play.
In the final five minutes, the Bulldogs sent everyone forward including the goal keeper to midfield on corner kicks. With 34 seconds remaining in the match, a Murray defender took down Kim Matthews inside the penalty box and the referee awarded a 90th minute penalty kick to the Bulldogs. Geiger step up to the spot and hit a shot off the near post but Shanks was the first to the rebound and tied the score with just 30 seconds left in regulation.
MSU scored the first goal of the match against the run of play in the 17th minute. After Samford had controlled possession, MSU's Lisa Pfeiffer crossed a ball to a wide open Schaller who turned and scored from 10 yards out. The Racers took the 1-0 lead into halftime despite being out-shot 8-4 in the opening period.
In the 55th minute, the Samford defense made an uncharacteristic mistake. Rebecca Mock passed a ball back to goalkeeper Crystal Royall, but MSU junior Kristin Robertson stole the pass and scored into the empty net. The Racers went up 3-0 after a no-call at midfield but Schaller in all alone against Royall and for the second time Schaller found the back of the net.
Tonight was the first time this season that the Bulldogs had given up more than one goal in a game.
Up next, the Racers continue their OVC road swing through Alabama as they play Jacksonville State on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. in Jacksonville, Ala.
