Murray State junior defensive lineman Marcus White was named to the 2003 All-Ohio Valley Conference First Team today, while five other Racer players earned All-OVC accolades as voted by the league's head football coaches and sports information directors.
MSU defensive backs Laroni Gallishaw and Michael Hanley, wide receiver Deandre Green and placekicker Jesse Ohliger were named All-OVC Second Team, while linebacker Bobby Sanders earned All-OVC Honorable Mention.
White, a native of Theodore, Ala., and a transfer from Auburn University, was second in the OVC in sacks with nine and tied for fifth in tackles for loss with 14.5. His nine sacks were the most by a Racer player since Anthony Hutch's school-record 9.5 sacks in 1996.
White's best game of the season was his four-sack performance against Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 1.
White teamed with Hanley and Gallishaw, who earned All-OVC honors as one the league's top cornerback duos, to lead the Racer defense which finished 2003 ranked fourth in the nation against the pass allowing just 142 yards per game through the air.
Hanley, a senior from Owensboro, Ky., finished second in the OVC in interceptions (5) and third in passes defended with 12 after transferring to MSU in 2002 from Indiana University.
Gallishaw, a junior from Lakeland, Fla., who transferred to MSU from Louisville prior to the 2003 season, was second in the OVC in passes defended with 13 and eighth in kick return average at 18.6 yards per return.
Senior wide receiver Deandre Green, a native of Prichard, Ala., led the Racers and was fourth in the OVC with 778 yards receiving on 52 catches. The Auburn University transfer was an All-OVC First Team selection in 2002.
Ohliger, a senior from Newark, Del., earned All-OVC Second Team honors after leading the OVC in field goal percentage connecting on 13-of-18 kicks on the season for 72.2-percent. He was also fourth in the OVC in scoring among kickers and 10th overall with 63 points (5.2 per game).
Sanders, a senior linebacker from Benton, Ky., earned OVC Honorable Mention after becoming the first Racer in school history to lead MSU in tackles for three-straight seasons. His 92 tackles and 8.2 tackle per game average was sixth-highest in the OVC.
