While college basketball fans will be filling out their NCAA Tournament brackets the next three weeks, Murray State football coach Joe Pannunzio will be filling out practice schedules.
Murray State begins spring football practice on Sunday, March 23 at 3:00 p.m, the coach announced recently.
“This is always an exciting time for football players and coaches,” said Pannunzio, who will be guiding his fourth Racer team this fall. “Coaches have been out recruiting and players have been taking part in conditioning drills, so everyone is anxious to get out on the field and have some fun.”
This spring should be even more enjoyable for the Racers, as they will be working to defend their 2002 Ohio Valley Conference co-championship.
“We had a great spring session last year, but this spring should be even better with all that's gone on in the past year,” said Pannunzio. “We're the defending conference champions and we got our first taste of the (Division) I-AA Playoffs. Our players and coaches should be real focused every day we're out there. Plus, we have a great schedule for next season and that gets everyone's attention.”
MSU opens up the 2003 season with a first-ever matchup with the University of Kentucky on Sept. 6 in Lexington, then hosts five home games, including league rivals Eastern Kentucky and Eastern Illinois.
NCAA rules allow 15 practices during the spring. MSU will conduct practices on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday at 3:00 p.m. each day and at 10:00 am. on
Saturdays, with the final practice scheduled for Friday, April 18.
