The 77th Women's Kentucky State Amateur Championship is being played this week at the StoneCrest Golf Course in Prestonsburg, Ky., and the Murray State women's golf program is out in full force.
MSU's Stephanie Baskey, a native of Mt. Sterling, Ky., who completed her Lady Racer career in May with a third-place finish at the OVC Championships in Paducah, Ky., advanced to the second round of the match-play event where she will meet her Lady Racer teammate Nikki Orazine in the second round on Wednesday at 10:02 a.m. CT.
Baskey, the No. 13 seed, earned a 1-up victory over Lauren Scholl in the first round, while Orazine, the No. 29 seed, also battled to a 1-up victory in her first round match against No. 4 seeded Kim Hartlage. Orazine, a native of Paducah, Ky., completed her second season of competition at MSU in May with a second-place finish at the OVC Championships.
MSU head coach Velvet Milkman, a former standout golfer at the University of Alabama during her collegiate playing days and the reigning Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Racers to their second-straight OVC title in May, dropped her first round match to 28th-seeded Sami Montgomery 3 & 2. She will play Christi Baron on Wednesday at 9:13 a.m. CT in the consolation bracket of the championship flight.
Milkman, a native of Murray, shot a 2-over-par 74 during Monday's qualifying round, just one shot off the pace, to qualify fifth for the 32-player championship bracket of the match play event.
The 32-player match play event is a single elimination event with the quarterfinals and semifinals set for Thursday and the championship match scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m. ET.
