The Murray State football program will take the first step in defending its 2002 Ohio Valley Conference title on Saturday night as the Racers kick off the 2003 season at home at Roy Stewart Stadium against Valparaiso. Racer fans will be treated to lots of fun and entertainment throughout the afternoon and evening.
Kickoff between MSU and Valpo is set for 6 p.m., but the pre-game festivities will begin earlier in the day at 3:30 p.m. in the tailgating area on the corner of 12th Street and Ky. Highway 121 South. Several tents and booths will be set up and live entertainment will be provided by The Murr-Vegas All Stars.
The season-opener, which has been designated as Staff Day at MSU, will also be a part of the NCAA's "Take A Kid To The Game" promotion. All children 12 years of age and under will receive free admission to the game.
The "Kids' Zone," a popular addition to the game-day atmosphere in 2002, is back for the 2003 season at MSU. The "Kids Zone," which features several inflatable games for children of all ages, will again be located in the south end zone of Stewart Stadium during the Racers' game with Valpo.
"We're really excited about opening the 2003 season on our home field in front of our fans," said fourth-year MSU head coach Joe Pannunzio. "We had a lot of success at home last season and we owe a lot of that to our great fans. I urge everyone to come out early Saturday afternoon and enjoy the game-day atmosphere of Racer football at Stewart Stadium."
MSU was a perfect 6-0 at home in 2002 and the Racers have won seven straight overall at Roy Stewart Stadium heading into Saturday night's matchup.
