Racers to host MSU Invitational

The Murray State men's golf team will host the MSU Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Racers' home course, Miller Memorial. The event is 54 holes of stroke play, in which a team and individual champion will be decided. Ten teams are scheduled to compete, including regional rival Southern Illinois and Ohio Valley Conference opponents Southeast Missouri State, Tennessee-Martin and Morehead State.
MSU head coach Eddie Hunt said this is the first time in a long while that the Racer men's program has hosted its own event.
"This is a great opportunity for Murray State," he said. "I hope to expand this event in coming years and make it a tournament that college golf coaches will want to enter once they see how it''s run in a first-class manner."
The tournament is also played on a challenging layout. Over the year, Miller Memorial has proven to be tough to handle, and at 6,700 yards, the par-71 course will give the players a tough test.
Eddie Hunt has been planning the event for several months.
"It's good for us to have a home tournament," he said. "It cuts down our expenses and decreases the time that our student-athletes have to miss classes."
Murray State has shown steady improvement, finishing third at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships in 2003, then second last spring. In the last two seasons, the Racers have won four team titles and finished second five times. Jamie Frazier, a junior from Glasgow, Ky., won two individual titles in that time, as has junior Kyle Shirley of Fountain Run, Ky.
The public is invited to attend the MSU Invitational, and admission if free.
