Samford's Rebecca Bohler got her first career goal just 8:01 into the game when she took a pass from Kim Matthews and kicked it in from 10 feet out.
The Bulldogs (3-4-0, 2-0-0 OVC) struck again before halftime when Heather Birdsell also got her first career goal on a pass from Allison Stone. Birdsell scored from 20 feet out from the left of the goal to give Samford a 2-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Bulldogs padded their lead when Marian Wagner scored her first goal of the season on a pass from Bohler just five feet from the mouth of the goal for the final score.
The Racers (4-7-0, 1-1-0 OVC) outshot Samford 11-10, and each team had six shots on goal.
Senior forward Theresa Reedy had a co-game-high three shots, with a co-game-high two shots on goal.
For Samford, Bohler and Wagner each had three shots, while Wagner had two on-goal.
In goal, Annie Fortier (3-4-0, 1-1-0 OVC) took the loss, turning away two first-half saves and playing the complete game.
Samford's Crystal Royall (3-3-0, 2-0-0 OVC) got the win, turning away six saves, four of those in the first half. Emily Morris played the last 8:20 in goal for the Bulldogs and helped complete the shutout.
"Our level of energy and emotion today was terrible," said MSU head coach Mike Minielli. "We knew that if they didn't come out and match Samford's energy level, we would struggle. Emotion and heart are big in this game, and it really made a difference in this game.
"We gave up some easy goals in the box, and when we got the ball down on their end, we just couldn't follow through. We played well in the middle, but we gave it away in the box."
Murray State hosts Jacksonville State (4-7-1, 1-1-0 OVC) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at MSU's Cutchin Field. JSU beat Tennessee-Martin this afternoon 1-0.
