The Murray State women's golf team finished second at the 24-team Great Smokies Women's Collegiate tournament, held at the par-72, 5,828-yard Waynesville (N.C.) Country Club, just six shots behind host and tournament champion Western Carolina.
The teams were able to get only one round in yesterday (Monday). Rains last night and this morning -- piling on top of an already-elevated water table due to the three hurricanes that passed through western North Carolina in September and October -- halted the tournament for the first time in its six-year history.
Senior Santie Koch tied for second in the 125-golfer tournament with an even-par 72, five strokes behind titlist Ashley Hovda of Western Carolina.
Junior Ilka Loubser tied for 10th with a 74, while sophomore Camilla Loeveid tied for 16th with a 75. Senior Nikki Orazine tied for 21st with a 76, while junior April Steenbergen tied for 32nd at 77.
The lowest and highest scores for MSU were only five strokes apart.
The Lady Racers finished ahead of the four other Ohio Valley Conference schools participating in the 24-team field. Tennessee Tech tied for fourth at 301, while Eastern Kentucky was ninth at 309, Samford was 11th at 311 and Austin Peay was tied for 14th at 318.
Murray State will next compete at the F&M Bank Intercollegiate, held Oct. 25-26 at Clarksville, Tenn.
