Racers place fifth at SMS Fall Invite

The Murray State men's golf team placed fifth out of 13 teams in the SMS Fall Invitational on Oct. 17-19 at the par-72, 7,066-yard Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo. Murray State finished with a three-round score of 902, finishing strong with a final-round 293, just four shots behind fourth-place Southern Illinois, five strokes behind third-place Northern Illinois and 10 shots behind second-place Southeast Missouri State.
Teams competing and their final scores included host Southwest Missouri State (882), Southeast Missouri State (892), Northern Illinois (897), Southern Illinois (898), MSU (902), Bradley (909), Northern Iowa (917), Saint Louis (924), Western Illinois (932), Tennessee-Martin (934), SMS-White (946), Eastern Illinois (952) and Creighton (955).
Of the 67 players who participated in the tournament, sophomore Kyle Shirley finished fourth overall, shooting an overall score of 220 (74-73-73), finishing just 10 shots behind titlist Austin Hackett of Southwest Missouri State.
Sophomore Will Cox finished tied for 19th overall, shooting a 228 (75-79-74), while freshman Michael Craft finished 23rd, shooting a 229 (78-78-73). Sophomore Jamie Frazier finished tied for 24th, shooting a 230 (77-80-73), while junior Blake Darnell finished tied for 33rd, shooting a 233 (74-79-80). Freshman Nicholas Griffen golfed as an individual and finished tied for 33rd, shooting a 233 (74-81-78).
The Racers' next match is on Oct. 25-26, when they will travel to Clarksville, Tenn., for the F&M Bank Invitational.
