Prior to the game, Murray State (7-9-1, 4-3-1 OVC) honored seniors Reedy, Erin Blackman, Jill Hawanchak, Shauna Kline, Lauren McAdams, and Jamie Roche.
Things looked promising early on, as Reedy took a long midfield pass from freshman defender Sara Struve and booted it in from 10 yards out just 1:47 into the game. The assist was Struve's third of the season, sharing the lead in that category with freshman forward Jen Nowak.
With her 13th goal of the season, Reedy tied the mark set by Jackie Thomas (2000-03) in 2000, MSU's inaugural season.
Both teams battled fiercely at midfield, and during a joust in the MSU penalty area, the Racers were called for a handball, setting up a penalty kick for the Lady Govs (7-9-2, 1-6-1 OVC). Senior Erin Mitchell popped it into the lower left part of the goal to tie the game at 1-1 after 28:51 of play.
Austin Peay took the lead for good when freshman Jessica Hosse scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season on a pass from Mitchell, scoring from 15 yards out after 31:12 of play, giving APSU a 2-1 halftime lead.
In the second half, Murray State outshot Austin Peay 8-1, but couldn't take advantage of the increased offense.
Although Austin Peay hadn't won a conference game prior to today, MSU head coach Mike Minielli reminded his team after the game that the Lady Govs were just a few goals from first place. APSU lost five OVC contests by just one goal, lost one other by two goals and tied Jacksonville State.
"We just got caught a little bit today looking ahead to next week," he said, "and Austin Peay is not a team you can look past. We came out really, really well. We had a lot of players in the game, because we wanted to give our starters a rest, since we've played them into the ground, so we played kids who haven't played that much."
Murray State closes out its regular-season schedule on Friday at IUPUI (Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis) at 4 p.m. CT.
OVC CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT: Murray State will host the first round (quarterfinal) of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 2, against either Jacksonville State or Southeast Missouri State, both teams tying at 3-3-2 and tying in their game together 0-0. A coin toss will be held in the OVC office tomorrow (Monday) to determine the seeding.
Murray State beat Jacksonville State 2-1 in double-overtime and won at SEMO 1-0 in double-overtime this season.
Murray State will go into the OVC Tournament as the No. 3 seed, equaling the highest seed the Racers have gotten in their five-year history. MSU was the third seed in its inaugural season of 2000.
Information about this year's OVC Championship Tournament will be released later this week.
