Junior running back Nick Turner was named Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week after turning in a stellar ground game against Tennessee-Martin on Saturday.
The 5-10, 182-pound native of Atlanta, Ga., led all rushers with 148 yards on 26 carries, averaging 5.7 yards per carry. He also scored a touchdown in the game.
Turner was one of three Racers to rush for 100 yards in the game, marking the first time on record that Murray State has had three 100-yard rushers in a single game. Ron Lane claimed 134 yards on 18 carries and two TDs, while Chad Cook had 106 yards on 19 runs. The trio's effort bolstered MSU to a season-high 385 rushing yards.
Despite an outstanding season on offense and special teams, this is the first league honor for Turner and the second of the season for Murray State. Freshman defensive back Derrick Parrott was named OVC Newcomer of the Week on Oct. 10.
Turner ranks second on the team with 78.9 rushing yards per game and has returned 28 punts for an average of 7.8 yards per return. Turner also leads the Racers with 21.4 yards per kickoff return. Turner has six rushing touchdowns and two TDs on returns.
The Racers close out their regular-season schedule Saturday at OVC rival Tennessee State with a chance to tie for the regular-season title. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 20.
