Racers Announce Five Signees To Open Spring Signing Period
2/5/2004 6:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Minielli, entering his fifth season as the Racers' only head coach since its first varsity campaign in 2000, has added Courtney Buchanan, Jenna Kirkpatrick, Frankie Maynard, Sara Struve and Molly Wolfe for the upcoming 2004 season.
"Our goals with this recruiting class were to improve our team speed, get a little more physical and improve our overall team depth," Minielli said. "We think with these five signees and the others we hope to add in the coming days, that we've accomplished those goals. "
Minielli, who indicated that he hoped to add five to seven more signees by the end of the signing period, expects this class to provide an immediate impact in 2004.
"Obviously, you never know for certain what you're going to get with each class, but we're certainly hopeful that several of our signees will play an immediate role in our program this fall," said Minielli. "Overall, I'm pleased with these first five signees and very hopeful that we can finish the class off with the same type of talent."
Leading the way is Wolfe, a native of Fountain Hills, Ariz., who was a First Team All-Region selection in 2003 at Fountain Hills High School as a member of the school's boys soccer team because FHHS does not have a girls soccer program.
Wolfe is not the only member of the class to receive individual accolades as Buchanan was named First Team All-State in 2003,, Kirkpatrick was named All-Conference in 2003 and Struve was voted Second Team All-Conference in 2003.
Coach Mike Minielli On The Signees:
-- Courtney Buchanan
"Courtney is a wing midfielder with nice height and speed. In our formation last season, we didn't use wing-mids, but we will in 2004 and Courtney should do well in that spot."
-- Jenna Kirkpatrick
"Jenna is a physical defender and a can play midfield as well. She's a great ball winner, and she fills our need for more height and a more physical presence on the field."
-- Frankie Maynard
"Frankie is a physical, high energy player. She certainly fits the profile of our needs, and we expect her to play midfield at Murray State."
-- Sara Struve
"Sara is very fast, and we will use her where we're lacking speed. She normally plays defender or forward, and she's just what we need to be a faster team in 2004."
-- Molly Wolfe
"Molly can play any position on the field, though she'll probably play defender at Murray State. She is a very fast and physical player. She certainly fills all of our needs, and will be an impact player for us."
