Racers finish third at Jacksonville State

The Murray State men's golf team finished third in the 14-team Amoco Ultimate/Young Oil Intercollegiate, held at the par-72, 6,956-yard Silver Lakes Golf Course in Jacksonville, Ala.
The Racers golfed a 310-299-306 to finish with a three-round score of 915. Armstrong Atlantic State, with whom MSU was tied for second after two rounds yesterday, shot an outstanding 289 in the final round to win the team title at 898. Host Jacksonville State, which was in first place after two rounds yesterday, placed second at 899.
Kyle Shirley tied for sixth in the 77-golfer meet with a 225, shooing an even-par 72 in the final round today to finish 10 strokes behind individual titlist Thomas Whittaker of Armstrong Atlantic State.
Nicholas Griffen tied for ninth at 227, while Will Cox tied for 29th at 234, Jamie Frazier tied for 33rd at 235 and Michael Craft tied for 56th at 241. Jay Cooper, golfing as an individual, tied for 17th overall with a 229, the best score among the eight players golfing as individuals.
Murray State will next compete at the Branson Creek Invitational on April 5-6 in Branson, Mo.
