Korir Wins 5,000-Meter Run To Lead MSU At SIU Spring Classic

Freshman distance runner Wesley Korir dominated the field to win the 5,000-meter run and lead the Murray State men's track and field team as they opened the outdoor season this weekend at the SIU Spring Classic in Carbondale, Ill.
Korir, a native of Eldoret, Kenya, ran to a time of 14 minutes, 57.92 seconds to finish nearly 20 seconds ahead of second place in the field of 15 runners, while MSU finished fifth overall with 22 points.
After arriving in Murray in January, Korir won the 5,000-meter run at the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships in February, and he continues to assert himself as one of the favorites for the outdoor title at the OVC's set for May 7-8 in Birmingham, Ala.

Chris Hobbs, sixth, high jump, 6-02.75; Brian Edwards, seventh, pole vault, 13-05.25; Chris Champion, eighth, shot put, 43-05.25; Derek Sargent, second, javelin, 176-10; Patrick Hammond, sixth, 3,000-meter steeple chase, 10:33.33; Brandon Lancaster, sixth, 1,500-meter run, 4:11.13; Brandon Manning, 10th, 110-meter hurdles, Matt Ernsting, seventh, 100-meter dash, 12.22; Ryan Stichter, eighth, 800-meter run, 1:58.15; Tim Bradley, sixth, 5,000-meter run, 15:39.11; Jeremy Burkeen, 10th, 5,000-meter run, 15:51.65.
Up next, MSU will compete at the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech on April 3 in Atlanta, Ga.
