The Murray State women's golf team rebounded from a tough first round of 330 to fire a second-round-best 311 to place fourth in the 17-team SIU Invitational.
The Lady Racers finished just two shots behind third-place Illinois State and seven strokes behind second-place Southern Illinois. SIU hosted the tournament, which was held on the par-72, 5,999-yard Hickory ridge Golf Course in Carbondale, Ill.
Strong winds and wet terrain hampered the first round of play yesterday (Sunday), as only two of the 17 teams shot better than 320.
Team champion Michigan fired a 310 yesterday and a 312 today to take the title with a team score of 622. Southern Illinois was second at 634, followed by Illinois State at 639, Murray State at 641, Northern Iowa at 649, Bradley at 654 and Southwest Missouri at 655.
Cuyler Hedley placed second in the 105-golfer meet with a 77-73 = 150, just two shots behind individual titlist Laura Olin of Michigan. Hedley's second-round 73 was the best score in the round among the individuals.
Santie Koch finished in eighth place at 157, while Christi Baron tied for 28th at 166, Julie Bennett tied for 55th at 173 and Nikki Orazine and Ashley Kelbough each tied for 57th at 174. Camilla Loeveid, golfing as an individual, finished tied for 57th at 174.
Murray State will next host the Big River Telephone Company Lady Racer Classic on April 5-6 at the Miller Memorial Golf Course.
