2004 Racer Regatta Set For Saturday At KenLake State Resort Park
3/30/2004 6:00:00 AM
The nine-race schedule for the 2004 edition of one of MSU's premier spring events will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the men's novice fours "A" final and will conclude with the men's varsity eights final set to begin at 11:15 a.m. Admission is free for everyone.
This year's regatta will feature teams from Xavier University, the University of Cincinnati, Rhodes College, Northwestern State and Murray State, and the nine-race event will be held on a 1,750-meter course.
"We're really excited about this year's regatta," said first-year MSU rowing head coach Bill McLean. "This is my first chance to be involved with the Racer Regatta, and I'm really looking forward to it.
"We've got some great competition coming in this year. Both Cincinnati and Xavier are making return trips to our event, and we've also got some new competition in Northwestern State and Rhodes College. It should make for some really exciting racing."
In one of the many close races last year, MSU and Xavier battled for the coveted women's varsity eights title with the Racers earning a close victory, and McLean believes this year's edition will feature the same type of exciting action.
"There seems to be a nice rivalry between brewing between us and Xavier in the varsity eights at the Racer Regatta, and I think it should be a competitive race this year," McLean said. "Every race on the schedule should be very, very competitive, and it should be enjoyable to watch."
The regatta, in its second year at KenLake Resort, will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the men's novice fours "A" final, followed by the "B" final at 8:45 a.m. The women's varsity fours final is set for 9:15 a.m. and will be followed by the men's varsity fours "A" final at 9:30 a.m. The men's varsity fours "B" final is set for 10 a.m. and will be followed by the women's novice fours final at 10:15 a.m. The schedule will conclude with the men's novice eights final at 10:45 a.m., the women's varsity eights final at 11 a.m. and the men's varsity eights final at 11:15 a.m. All times are tentative and are subject to change.
"I really urge people to come out and take part in this year's regatta," McLean said. "KenLake is a spectacular place to watch the racing, and it should be a great morning for the whole family to enjoy."
