Murray State sophomore Jamie Frazier fired an opening round 3-under-par 69 to win medalist honors and lead the Racer golf team to a first-place tie at the weather-shortened Greg Palmer Eagle Classic in Morehead, Ky., following the cancellation of today's final round due to inclement weather.
The tournament, which was originally scheduled for three rounds, was cut back to just one after Monday's second round was also cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
Playing in a steady drizzle on Monday, the Racers shot a combined 10-over-par 298 to tie host Morehead State for the tournament title at the 6,902-yard, par-72 Eagle Trace Golf Course. Butler University finished third in the 12-team field with a 311, while Cleveland State and Western Illinois tied for fourth with 312's.
Frazier, a native of Glasgow, Ky., shot 33 on the front nine and 36 on the back to card the 69, which was two shots ahead of second-place Colin Christie of Butler.
Paducah freshman Michael Craft shot a first-round 75 in the 69-golfer tournament to sit tied for sixth, while sophomore Kyle Shirley (Fountain Run, Ky.) and freshman Nicolas Griffen (Hawesville, Ky.) tied for 13th after firing a pair of 77's.
MSU will now prepare for the Ohio Valley Conference Championships on April 26-28 at the Country Club of Paducah (Ky.).
