Hedley, Lady Racers Hold Down Second After Day One Of OVC Championship

Senior Cuyler Hedley fired an opening round 79 to lead the Murray State women's golf team to second place after the first round of the 2004 Ohio Valley Conference Championship today at the 5,817-yard, par-72 course at the Country Club of Paducah (Ky.).
MSU, winners of the last two OVC titles, shot an opening-round 325 in the 54-hole event to sit just two shots behind first round leader Tennessee Tech. OVC newcomer Jacksonville State is third after a 327, while Eastern Kentucky holds fourth in the field of eight teams after a 334.
Hedley, a native of Cobourg, Ontario and the 2002 OVC Golfer of the Year, is tied for second and just one shot off the lead in the individual standings while leading four MSU players in the top-14 spots.
Senior Nikki Orazine of Paducah, Ky., who finished second in the 2003 OVC Championship, fired an opening round 80 and sits tied for fifth overall. Junior Ashley Kelbough's 82 placed her a tie for ninth in the field of 40 golfers, while fellow junior Santie Koch is tied for 14th after her opening round 84.
The second round of action for the women will begin on Tuesday at 11 a.m. CT, while the first MSU player will not begin until 12:20 p.m. The third and final round of play is scheduled for Wednesday.
