Shirley, Racers Tied For Second After First Round Of OVC Championship

Sophomore Kyle Shirley fired an opening round 1-under-par 71, the second-lowest round of the day, to lead the Murray State men's golf team to a tie for second place after the first round of the 2004 Ohio Valley Conference Championship today at the 6,915-yard, par-72 course at the Country Club of Paducah (Ky.).
The Racers' first-round 302 placed them just four shots behind first round leader Austin Peay and tied for second overall with OVC newcomer Jacksonville State. Morehead State and Tennessee State are tied for fourth in the field of 11 teams with a pair of 305's.
Shirley, a native of Fountain, Run, Ky., finished with a 35 - 36 = 71 to hold a tie for second place in the individual standings just one shot behind first-round leader Drew Alexander of Eastern Kentucky.
Freshman Nicolas Griffen is tied for eighth in the field of 55 golfers after an opening round 74, while sophomore Jamie Frazier sits tied for 24th after a 78.
The second round of action for the men will begin on Tuesday at 8 a.m. CT, while the first MSU player will not begin until 10 a.m. The third and final round of play is scheduled for Wednesday starting at 8 a.m.
