Korir Wins 10,000-Meter Run To Lead MSU At OVC Outdoor Championships

Freshman distance runner Wesley Korir won first-place in the 10,000-meter run to lead the Murray State men's track and field team today during the first of two days of competition at the 2004 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships at Samford University's Seibert Stadium in Birmingham, Ala.
Korir, a native of Eldoret, Kenya, led the field of 13 runners with a time of 31 minutes, 9.58 seconds to secure 10 points for MSU. Overall, the Racers are in third in the field of seven teams with 23 points.
Sophomore Derek Sargent, a native of Ottoville, Ohio, scored six points for the Racers after finishing third in the javelin throw with a distance of 53.68 meters, while senior Jeremy Burkeen of Benton, Ky., scored four points after a fifth-place finish in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:39.92.
Junior Tim Bradley of St. Louis, Mo., earned seventh place and two points in the 10,000 with a time of 33:00.86, while freshman Chris Hobbs of Douglasville, Ga., earned one point with a tie for seventh in the high jump with a height of 1.88 meters.
Freshman Brandon Manning of Atlanta, Ga., also had a solid day with a time of 15.83 seconds in the preliminary round of the 110-meter high hurdles to secure a spot in Saturday's finals.
Saturday's final round is set to begin at 9 a.m. with the men's discus and the women's triple jump.
