Korir Wins 5,000-Meter Run To Lead MSU At OVC Outdoor Championships

Freshman distance runner Wesley Korir won first-place in the 5,000-meter run earlier today for his second individual title (10,000-meter run) at the 2004 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships at Samford University's Seibert Stadium in Birmingham, Ala.

Korir, a native of Eldoret, Kenya, led the way with a time of 14 minutes, 46.91 seconds to secure 10 points for MSU and a second spot at the NCAA Mid-East Regionals on May 28-29 at LSU (Baton Rouge, La.). Korir also won the OVC title in the 10,000-meter run on Friday.

Overall, the Racers finished sixth in the field of seven teams with 38 points. Eastern Illinois won the team title with 260 points, followed by Southeast Missouri in second with 163 points and Eastern Kentucky in third with 122 points.

This is the final event of the 2004 season for the full MSU track and field team.
