Six Lady Racers Make Championship Flight At State Amateur Tournament

Six current and former Murray State women's golfers earned spots in the Championship Flight of the 78th Annual Women's Kentucky State Amateur Golf Championship during Monday's 18-hole qualifying round at the Lafayette Golf Club in Falls of Rough, Ky.
Former MSU standout Jessica (Widman) Grace led the way for the Lady Racer golfers with a round of 79 on the 5,574-yard, par-72 course and the No. 11 spot in the field of 32 golfers in the Championship Flight. She will meet No. 22-seeded Sami Montgomery-Claywell on Tuesday at 11:37 a.m. in the first round of the match-play tournament.
Current Lady Racer April Steenbergen, a junior from Russellville, Ky., qualified 13th after a round of 80 and will meet No. 20 McKenzie Humpreys at 10:27 a.m. on Tuesday.
MSU senior Nikki Orazine, the 2004 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year and a native of Paducah, Ky., fired an 82 to earn the No. 16 position and will take on Lady Racer signee Lauren Scholl at 9:59 a.m. Scholl (Somerset, Ky.) earned the No. 17 position after also firing an 82 on Monday.
Lady Racer sophomore Christi Baron, a native of Louisville, Ky., earned the No. 18 spot after another 82 in the qualifying round and will take on No. 15 Erin Faulkner at 10:55 a.m. Former Lady Racer Stephanie Baskey was the sixth MSU representative to make the Championship Flight as she qualified 23rd following a round of 83 and will take on No. 10-seeded Kim Hartlage at 11:09 a.m. on Tuesday.
MSU sophomore Lauren Hughes of Mayfield, Ky., just missed on making the Championship Flight, but will be the No. 1-seed in the 1st Flight after an 87 in qualifying. She will meet No. 16-seeded Debbie Abshear at 8:56 a.m.
The second round of the match-play event is set for Wednesday, followed by the third round and semifinals on Thursday and the finals on Friday.
