Lady Racers Make Strong Showing On Day One At State Amateur Championship

The Murray State women's golf program made an impressive statement during the first round of the 78th Annual Women's Kentucky State Amateur Golf Championship as five current and former Lady Racer golfers advanced to the second round of match-play in the Championship Flight after Tuesday's first round action at the Lafayette Golf Club in Falls of Rough, Ky.
MSU junior April Steenbergen and sophomore Christi Baron advanced to the second round, as did MSU signee Lauren Scholl. Former Lady Racer golfers Jessica (Widman) Grace and Stephanie Baskey also advanced to the 16-player second round, while MSU sophomore Lauren Hughes advanced to the quarterfinals of the First Flight.
Steenbergen, the No. 13 seed and a native of Russellville, Ky., defeated No. 20-seeded McKenzie Humphreys 5 & 4 on Tuesday at the par-72, 5,574-yard course. She will meet No. 29-seeded LeeAnn Dickerson in the second round on Wednesday at 11:02 a.m.
Baron, a native of Louisville and the No. 18 seed, earned a tough 19-hole victory over No. 15-seeded Erin Faulkner to earn a second round matchup with No. 31-seeded Morgan Cross on Wednesday at 11:16 a.m.
Scholl, the No. 17 seed and a native of Somerset, Ky., advanced to the second round after a 2-up victory over MSU senior and teammate-to-be Nikki Orazine. With the win, Scholl advances to meet No. 32-seeded Sandra Martin on Wednesday at 10:48 a.m. in the second round.
Grace, the No. 11 seed, earned 4 & 2 win over Sami Montgomery-Claywell in the first round and will meet No. 27 Tammy Mahar at 11:37 a.m. on Wednesday, while Baskey, the No. 23-seeded player, earned an impressive 5 & 3 win over Kim Hartlage to set up a second round meeting with Taryn Durham on Wednesday at 11:23 a.m.
Hughes, a native of Mayfield, Ky., and the No. 1 seed in the First Flight, earned a dominating 8 & 7 win over Debbie Abshear in the first round to set up a quarterfinal matchup against No. 8-seeded Laura Anderson at 9:24 a.m.
The third round and semifinals of the Championship Flight are set for Thursday with the finals in all flights scheduled for Friday.
