Former Tennessee Tech standout Misty Garrett was selected by Murray State women's basketball head coach Joi Williams to be an assistant coach with the Lady Racers program.
Garrett comes to Murray State after serving two years as a graduate assistant coach with the Tennessee Tech women's basketball program. At Tech, she was in charge of administrative duties and helped with recruiting, individual workouts and on-the-floor coaching.
As a player, Garrett ranks ninth on TTU's career free-throw percentage list (.747). She earned All-Ohio Valley Conference Second Team honors in 2000-01 and was named to the All-OVC Tournament Team that same year.
Tennessee Tech won or shared the OVC titles in each of her four years there. The Golden Eaglettes went 58-10 (.853) in OVC play in her four seasons, winning the 2000 and 2001 regular-season titles outright and sharing the 1999 and 2002 crowns. TTU won the OVC Tournament in 1999 and 2000, earning berths in the NCAA Tournament in those seasons and facing Old Dominion and Texas Tech, respectively, on their home courts.
"I am very excited about Misty joining our staff," Williams said. "She brings a wealth of knowledge about the OVC, and her playing experience speaks for itself. She will work with our guards as well as handle a lot of administrative duties, such as film exchange, scouting and recruiting."
Garrett, a native of Livingston, Tenn., earned her bachelor of science degree in health and physical education from Tennessee Tech in December 2002. She earned her master's degree in instructional leadership from TTU last May.
She was a member of this year's American Collegiate Intramural Championships national champion team, consisting mostly of former Tennessee Tech players. The team, called Tennessee Tech Woulda Coulda Shoulda, was one of 17 to qualify for the national tournament, beating Wisconsin-LaCrosse 45-39 in the title game in Orlando, Fla., in April.
"I was very excited when Coach Williams called me," Garrett said. "This is a very good opportunity for me. Murray State is a great place to play basketball; there are a lot of opportunities there with recruiting. I think Murray State has a bright future."
The Lady Racers open their 2004-05 campaign with an exhibition game on Nov. 6 against St. Louis Goldstar. Murray State opens its regular-season schedule on Nov. 19 at the Moran Realty Classic at DePaul in Chicago, Ill.
