Murray State golfer Jamie Frazier competes this week with the best amateur players in the country at the 104th United States Amateur in Mamaronek, N.Y. Frazier, a junior from Glasgow , Ky., was the medalist qualifier at sectional competition in Georgetown, Ky., two weeks ago, and took one of only three spots available to a field of 70 players.
Playing at Winged Foot Country Club -- the site of the 2006 U.S. Open -- the players are finding tall rough and fast greens. At mid-day, only two players were under par. Frazier shot a first-round 82 and stands in 229th place. All 300-plus competitors play two rounds of stroke play, and the top 64 will advance to match play, eventually deciding the champion this weekend.
Murray State coach Eddie Hunt said he's proud of his star player, saying, “Making the U.S. Amateur shows all the hard work Jamie has put in this summer is paying off. He's had an excellent summer already with two wins, and potentially has the ability to be the top player next season in the Ohio Valley Conference.”
Hunt added, “I know he's not happy with an 82, but just making it to the finals is a huge accomplishment, and it's only going to give him more confidence.
Frazier is an excellent student as well, majoring in accounting. An OVC scholar athlete, Frazier has a 3.7 overall grade-point average.
He's also a big factor in the resurgence of the Racers golf program. In the last two seasons, the Racers have finished third and second, respectively, at the OVC Championship Tournament.
Frazier's teammate, Michael Craft, a sophomore from Paducah, Ky., missed qualifying for the United States Amateur by one shot at the sectional in St. Louis, Mo.
