Racers place fifth at Gulf Coast meet

The Murray State men's golf team placed fifth in close competition at the 10-team Gulf Coast Collegiate, held at the par-72, 6,841-yard Bridges Golf Resort at Bay St. Louis, Miss., on Sept. 13-14.
The Racers shot a 308-294 = 602, with its second-round score ranking as fourth-best in the 20 rounds of play.
Nicholls State won the tourney with a two-round score of 596, followed by Mobile and Lipscomb at 598, Tennessee-Martin at 601, Murray State at 602, Jackson State 605, Birmingham-Southern 611, Belmont 619, Tennessee State 624 and North Alabama 627. Nine strokes separated first and sixth place.
Kyle Shirley and Nicholas Griffin tied for 12th place in the 56-golfer event with a score of 149. Shirley shot a 2-under-par 70 in the second round of play, while Griffin fired a 72.
Michael Craft tied for 18th with a 151, while Jamie Frazier tied for 25th with a 154 and Jay Cooper tied for 39th with a 159.
John Quinn of Birmingham-Southern was the titlist with a 139, shooting an incredible 10-under 62 in the second round.
Murray State next competes at the Buffalo Rock Showdown in Birmingham, Ala., on Sept. 20-21.
