Murray State junior wide receiver Jonathan Eiland was named Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week on Sunday, for his 10-catch, 136-yard performance in a 42-21 loss to Tennessee Tech on Saturday.
Eiland, from Hattiesburg, Miss., turned in the first 100-plus-yard receiving effort for Murray State since DeAndre Green caught seven balls for 141 yards in a 38-20 loss to Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 1, 2003, a span of 18 games. The 5-9, 165-pound receiver has caught 17 passes for a team-high 187 yards in the first four games of the 2005 season.
This accolade marks the third time a Racer has been recognized by the league office this season. Nick Turner was named Specialist of the Week and Michael Sturgis was named Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 17.
The Racers (1-3) resume action on Saturday, when they face Jacksonville State at home. Kickoff time is set for 6 p.m.
