The OVC Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest individual honor that can be earned by OVC student-athletes, and is given annually to three men and three women junior or senior student-athletes for their accomplishments in both the classroom and athletic arena, and because of their leadership qualities. The six winners were selected from a group of 20 finalists by a vote of the OVC faculty athletics representatives.
Honorees must have performed athletically with distinction, earned at least a 3.25 grade-point average, and conducted themselves in a manner which has brought credit to the student-athlete, his or her institution, intercollegiate athletics and the OVC.
In the midst of his fourth year as a member of the Murray State men's golf team, Frazier is coming off a runner-up finish at the 2005 OVC Golf Championship that earned him all-tournament honors. He has also competed in several amateur events over the past three years, including the 2004 U.S. Amateur.
In the classroom, the senior has earned distinction as a three-time selection to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll while double-majoring in accounting and finance and carrying a 3.80 grade-point average. Frazier is currently serving his second term on Murray State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is a member of the Accounting Society, the Finance and Economics Society and the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society. Frazier has also made the Dean's List for all three years he has attended so far at Murray State.
In addition, Frazier volunteers his time as an instructor with several junior golf programs in his hometown of Glasgow, Ky.
"When I assumed the job of Murray State's men's golf coach, Jamie Frazier was my first recruit," head coach Eddie Hunt said. "Jamie is not only one of the most talented athletes at Murray State; he is also an outstanding student, individual and representative for Murray State University. He has been an exemplary role model for our young players in the classroom, on the golf course and in his daily activities. Jamie has a passion for excellence and a strong desire to excel in all areas of his life. He is a well-mannered, polite individual who cares about his teammates and understands the amount of organization, time, management and responsibility it takes to be a happy, successful student-athlete."
The other recipients of the award include Shanelle Howell of Jacksonville State (women's golf), Chad McMahan of Tennessee-Martin (football), Anne Morrow of Tennessee Tech (volleyball), Daniel Strackeljahn of Eastern Illinois (track/cross country) and Brianna Venable of Austin Peay (softball).
