Orazine ties for first at JSU meet, Lady Racers place second

The Murray State women's golf team finished in second place at the eight-team JSU Chris Banister Classic, held at the par-72, 5,989-yard Silver Lakes Golf Course in Gadsden, Ala., yesterday and today.
Senior Nikki Orazine tied for first place in the 44-golfer event, but lost on the first hole of the sudden-death tie-breaker. Orazine shot a 78-76-77 = 231 in the three-round tournament.
Orazine equaled a second-round-best 76, but titlist Mercedes Huarte of JSU fired a tournament-best 73 in the final round to force the tie-breaker.
Host Jacksonville State won the tournament with a three-round total of 943. Murray State was second at 955, followed by Lamar at 967, Tennessee Tech at 1021, Eastern Illinois at 1023, Arkansas State at 1036, Belmont at 1039 and Shorter at 1085. It marked the first event of the 2004-05 year that an Ohio Valley Conference team has scored better than MSU. The six-time OVC champion has outscored conference teams 15 times thus far this season.
Senior Santie Koch finished in fifth place with a 76-85-76 = 237, while sophomore Ilka Loubser was seventh with an 80-84-78 = 242. Junior April Steenbergen tied for 15th with an 81-88-79 = 248, while sophomore Christi Baron was 25th with a 92-85-81 = 258. Sophomore Camilla Loeveid golfed as an individual and finished in 22nd place with an 84-85-86 = 255.
Murray State will next compete at the El Diablo Classic at Ocala, Fla., on March 21-22.
