Racers finish seventh at 19-team El Diablo

The Murray State men's golf team was in second place at the 19-team El Diablo Intercollegiate after two rounds on Saturday, but suffered a third-round 318 yesterday to finish in seventh place, one stroke ahead of Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Kentucky.
The meet was played at the par-72, 7,045-yard El Diablo Golf and Country Club in Citrus Springs, Fla., and was hosted by Marshall.
Oklahoma City won the tournament with a three-round score of 896, followed by Texas-San Antonio at 906, Ball State at 913, Yale at 914, Rhode Island at 916, Elon at 917, Murray State at 919, Eastern Kentucky and Winthrop tied at 920, Army at 924, Florida Gulf Coast at 928, Marquette at 938, Princeton at 943, host Marshall at 948, Florida Atlantic at 955, Wright State at 958, Connecticut at 959, Siena at 970 and Hartford at 1014.
The Racers shot a second-round 299, the fifth-best single-round score of the 57 team rounds to finish Saturday's play at 601, just six shots behind then-leader and champion Oklahoma City, but MSU struggled in the third round for the seventh-place finish.
Junior Kyle Shirley tied for 17th at the 111-golfer tournament with a 77-74-77 = 228, just nine strokes behind titlist Jay Pannone of Rhode Island. Sophomore Michael Craft tied for 22nd with a 76-73-80 = 229, while junior Jamie Frazier tied for 31st with a 75-75-81 = 231, junior Will Cox tied for 36th with a 74-77-81 = 232, and freshman Jerry Price tied for 69th with an 85-78-80 = 243. Sophomore Nicholas Griffin, golfing as an individual, tied for 82nd with an 80-83-84 = 247.
Murray State is playing in the Grub Mart Invitational at Gadsden, Ala., today (Monday) and tomorrow.
