Racers compete with Drake in dual

(March 27, 2005) -- The Murray State women's rowing team competed against Drake in a dual meet on March 19 on Kentucky Lake.
The lake had a sustained tailwind of 10 to 15 miles per hour, causing choppy conditions during the varsity race, which got under way at the 1700-meter mark.
The Racers led the varsity eight for the first 200 meters before Drake was able to get back on course and gain on MSU. Dake led for the last 500 meters of the race.
Drake finished with a time of 5 minutes, 50.08 seconds, just 5.29 seconds ahead of the Murray team. The Drake novice B boat finished with a time of 6:17.63.
In the Murray boat were coxswain Sam Hobbs, stroke Sarah Bullock, Kristin Slater, Rachel Brown, Elaine Schaad, Rachel Hopper, Tracy Bogard, Audrey Ferguson and bow Colleen Rice.
In the novice race, the winds picked up considerably, sustained at 15 to 20 miles per hour. The race began at the 1500-meter mark.
Both teams came off even before Drake made its move in the second 500 meters and took the lead for good.
Drake finished with a time of 5:47.0, 20 seconds ahead of the MSU boat.
Murray State will host its annual Racer Regatta this Saturday, April 2, in Aurora, Ky.
