Racers Football Release 2005 Schedule

Five home games and six road games make up the 2005 Murray State Football schedule released today. The Racers are again taking on a division 1-A opponent to start the season.
The Racers will travel to Starkville and tangle with the Bulldogs of Mississippi State Saturday Sept. 3rd.
Head coach Joe Pannunzio who coached in the Southeastern Conference at Mississippi and Auburn says the Racers are glad to open up the season against the Bulldogs. "We've faced a D-1 team every season I've been here, I think it gives our kids a chance to show more people what they can do." Pannunzio adds, "Last year at UConn, Nick Turner sure put on a show when he took that kick off back for a touchdown."
The Mississippi State game means the Racers will have played a D-1 opponent every year since 1998. Here are the Racers games since 1998 against division-one programs: 2004 Connecticut, 2003 Kentucky, 2002 Memphis, 2001 Ole Miss and Minnesota, 2000 Middle Tennessee, 1999 Wisconsin and 1998 BYU.
The Racers home opener is at 6:00 p.m. Sept. 17th against Indiana State, which is also Family Weekend.
The Racers open play in the Ohio Valley Conference at home Oct. 8th against defending champion Jacksonville State.
Homecoming for Murray State is Oct. 22nd when the Racers host Eastern Illinois in the traditional 3:00 p.m. kick off.
The Racers wind up the home season Nov. 5th against Eastern Kentucky and Nov. 12th against Austin Peay. The Governors announced their return to the OVC in football last week. All Racer games against APSU will be non-conference until the 2007.
Pannunzio likes the Racers conference schedule saying, "We've got the OVC's big hitters at home and playing teams like Jacksonville, Eastern Kentucky and Eastern Illinois, it's better to have them at home than on the road."
Tickets for the Murray State home games will go on sale this summer.
