Murray State head women's basketball coach Joi Felton announced the hiring of Kevin Waters to the Lady Racers staff as assistant coach. Waters, 37, comes to Murray State after a flourishing career that has taken him from the high school level as a head coach to college and on to professional basketball in the World Basketball Association.
"There is no doubt in my mind that Kevin Waters will be a great addition to Lady Racer basketball," Felton said. "He has a very good knowledge of the game and is someone who understands what it takes to be successful.
A graduate of Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Fla., Waters said it didn't take long to say yes when Murray State came calling.
"I'm very excited about coming to Murray State," Waters said. "This is a great opportunity to work with a great coach like Joi and to experience coaching at the Division I level.
"I'd say my coaching strength is in player development and recruiting. My past coaching experience taught me that you first have to find talented players that fit into your program, but then the work is just beginning. Then, you have to develop the talent. I'm looking forward to working with the MSU program."
Felton said Waters will be involved with recruiting and coaching the Lady Racers' post players.
"Kevin is a good motivator and also has the type of personality that will make him a strong recruiter," Felton said. "I look forward to Kevin bringing in new ideas and helping our program advance to a higher level."
Waters will join current assistant coaches Rob Cross and Misty Garrett on the Lady Racers staff.
Waters served as the first boys' basketball head coach at Newberry High School of Gainesville, Fla., in 1996, and then moved to Lofton High School in Gainesville in 1998. From 1999 to 2001, Waters was an assistant men's coach at his alma mater, Edward Waters College. Last season, he coached as a volunteer assistant at Kennesaw State University. This spring, Waters was the director of player personnel for the Gainesville (Ga.) Knights of the World Basketball Association.
